Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory disease. If you have been around rodents and develop symptoms, seek medical care immediately.

Disease Progression

Phase 1 (1-5 days)

Early Phase

  • Fever and muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness and chills
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting
Phase 2 (4-10 days)

Progressive Phase

  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Increasing respiratory distress
  • Fluid in lungs
Phase 3 (Critical)

Severe Phase

  • Severe respiratory failure
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Requires ICU care
  • 38% fatality rate for HPS

When to Seek Medical Help

Seek immediate medical attention if you:

  • Have been in areas with rodent activity and develop fever, muscle aches, or shortness of breath
  • Have cleaned or disturbed rodent nests, droppings, or trapped rodents
  • Are experiencing progressive difficulty breathing
